All About Basket Hitches: A Lift Above the Rest!
This blog series will focus entirely on some of the uses, benefits, and limitations of all things sling hitches. We’ll start with one of the most common hitch types: the basket hitch.
Hitch types are the same across sling materials—wire rope, chain, nylon, or polyester—but each material has unique applications, which we’ll explore later. All sling styles double the vertical load capacity in a true “basket” configuration with two crane hooks or a spreader beam.
Single basket hitches provide an effective means of hoisting objects in a variety of shapes and sizes. Operators commonly use basket hitches to hoist objects without designated lugs, providing increased control over the load when used correctly. A critical aspect of using a basket hitch is ensuring proper sling protectors are used on objects with sharp corners to extend sling life and prevent failure during the lift.
You can also double wrap a single basket to create a more secure load, while maintaining the doubled capacity. Creating a double basket requires accounting for the additional length needed in the slings for the job. In certain applications, selecting the correct length sling is crucial for ensuring the safety of the lift. A double basket hitch is perfect for lifting loose objects like pipe, offering extra stability and control. It ensures a secure pick point and prevents failure during the lift.
